Crochet Tutorial: Market Bags, Two ways

I was looking for a light weight yarn to make a couple of bags for this summer. I was so happy when I discovered the Mini Washi yarn from Katia in my local craft store.

I had in mind to make two bags with this yarn: one like a tote market bag and a round one. I’ve been seeing them everywhere lately and they are so simple to make. Definitely beginner friendly!

You mainly need to know: the single crochet (SC) and how to work in rounds. After you can adapt it to the size and color you want.

For each bag I used two balls of the same yarn but in different colours.

You will need:

  • 2 balls of Mini Washi Katia yarn (50gr, 200mts, 70% Polyester – 30% Viscose) in color stone grey (203) and 2 in color pale brown (206)
  • Crochet hook n° 3 (one strand of yarn) for the market bag
  • Crochet hook n°5 (two strands of yarn) for the round one

Tote Market bag

Dimensions: 40cm x 32cm

I used one strand of yarn and a crochet hook n°3 ( it’s recommended a 4-5mm ). I chose a smaller hook to make it tighter.

ch: chain / sc: single crochet / st(s): stitch(es) / ss: slip stitch

Note: since we’re crocheting in rounds it’s better to use a stitch marker to put in every first stitch of each round.

Foundation: Start making 30 ch +1 (or aprox 16cm).

Round 1: 1 sc in the 2nd st from the hook, 1sc in the next 28 sts, 3sc in the last st (corner), continue 1sc in the next 28 sts, 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the beginning (corner). We just created a round corner increasing 2 sts in each corner, 3 sc in the second and the last st.

Round 2: 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in the next 28 sts, 2sc in the next 3 sts from the corner, continue 1sc in the next 28 sts, 2sc in the last 2 sts.

Round 3-14: Continue sc and increasing in the 3 sts of each corner until you have a base of 30 cm approximately.

From round 15-52: only 1 sc for every st until it mesures around 27cm or continue till you have the length you prefer.

Edging: For the end you can just finish with a ss in the last round or you can make a nice simple edge. It’s has to be a multiple of 6.

Make 1 sc in first st, *skip 2 sts, 5dc in the same st, skip 2 sts, 1sc in the next one*, repeat *, finish with a ss in the first sc.

Handles: You can recycle handles from an old bag you don’t use anymore or you can also crochet it if you still have enough yarn. Mine I made from a couple of faux leather straps I had at home

Round bag

Dimensions: diameter ø 38cm , 5cm width

I used two strands crocheted together with a hook n° 5

Front and Back: Start with a magic ring and a base of 8 sc. For the second round, 2 sc for every last st (16sts). In the 3rd round, 2sc in the first st, 1sc in the next one, 2sc in the next and repeat (24sts). You will continue increasing to form a circle until round 17. In round 18, only 1 sc for every st bellow. (Make another one)

Side: make a base of 6 sc and continue sc for 80 rows.

Assemblage: I added a yute threat for some contrats to assembly the pieces and make the handles, but if you prefer you can use the same yarn. I used a blanket stitch for the side, front and back. I made some small handles with a couple of rows of half double crochet (hdc) that I wrapped around with the threat to make them more sturdy. Then I added some shoulder handles made from braids.

I love this bags because you can adapt this pattern and make them any size you want. You can use more than one color and make different patterns. You can even add some embroidery accents and it would just look lovely!

I hope you like this and find it helpful.
